What a Marina

Brian

Wednesday October 24, 2012
We are all up early as there is much to do. Penny took the laundry off to be done and Rene and Hugh shot Brian up the mast to remove the instruments using the new powered windlass instead of elbow grease. What a luxury! By 10am we were moved to the staging area where the pump out was done and we waited our turn in the 70 ton hoist, the smaller of the two in operation. The big one will lift 330 tons! The boats are set on a cradle which is picked up by a hydraulic trailer and “filed” based on the launch date. Any changes in the launch date will require a fee of 50 to 250 Euros for every boat they have to move. There are 1000 boats on the hard and maybe twice that in the water. Necessity is set between two 150’ monster sailboats. If either one tips over, we will be a pancake! They will certainly block the wind. I have never seen a marina this big or this efficient.
Penny started on the bottom paint and Brian and Hugh retrieved the outboard which was being fixed and stowed it aboard. Rene looked after taping the waterline for paint as well as a host of other smaller jobs. She fell down the companionway after slipping on a wet step so was feeling somewhat beat up. With the haul out jobs well in hand we retired to a new hotel about halfway into Marmaris. It has been recommended by some other boaters and is much nicer than the one we stayed in with Barb & John when we arrived. Penny & Hugh have rented a car for a couple of days so we were chauffeured to our evening’s lodging. We then went to the Orange restaurant (Barb would approve) and enjoyed a lovely meal including a tray kebab which was a sort of meatloaf for 2. All the food was spicy but good.
