Founded in 800 BC the sanctuary of Apollo Maleatas and in 600 BC the healing god Asclepieion were established in this remote area of the ancient world. Epidaurus is about 25 kms from Navplion. In the 5th century BC a theater was erected here as well, along with an Agora, stoa, and stadium. The theater was enlarged in the 3rd century BC to accommodate 14,000 patrons. It is still in use today. Standing in the center of the stage one can whisper to the folks in the top tier. Outstanding acoustics. A most unusual experience. We were able to enjoy the site with only 5-6 other folks.
