Passage to Tunisia

22 September 2014 | Sicilian Straits
Dean, on board Necessity
From Licata the Tunisian east coast lies about 170 nm to the southwest. As the forecast was quite good we decided to pass by Pantellaria and head straight for Post Yasmine near Hammamet. Everything was going well until the engine died, right in the middle of the Sicilian Straits. Switched filters and got farther along until the diesel quit all together. But by now we were well into out on our 36 hour passage. The wind and seas had subsided and we could get deeper into the problem. We had noted the vacuum gauge was reading quite high and we knew all the filters were clear. So, that left the fuel line itself. Replaced that and the situation still did not improve. Further testing revealed the fuel pickup tube going down into the fuel tank was blocked. The solution was to take the inspection port off the top of the tank (do not recommend this in high seas) and place a temporary plastic fuel pick-up tube down into the tank. This worked well allowing us to motor and motor-sail into Port Yasmine before sunset.
Now began the long check-in procedure with Immigration and Customs. How many cigarettes do you have? None. How much alcohol? None. Really? What about beer, what about wine, what about liquor? The previously undressed customs official seemed incredulous that we were a dry boat. We never did figure out why he was in his underwear. We were told to wait outside the door until he dressed. The heat perhaps?
The new scam is to try to confiscate your Tunisian currency. Apparently we are not allowed to bring Tunisian dinars into the country. Where did you get this currency? A Chartered bank in Canada was the answer. He seemed to believe there was a black market operating and our 100 dinars (about $70 CDN) would somehow upset their fragile economy. In the end he said he would ‘close his eyes’ to our infraction. So off we went to the boat for an ‘inspection’ with both the Immigration and customs officials (both with side arms). They seemed to expect a ‘gift’ but did not push too hard and we did not offer anything.
While crossing the shipping lanes a big freighter doing 20 knots passed in front of us. We were surprised to see dolphins leaping out of the water to such a height (perhaps 20-30 ft!). You can see one in the attached photo. Quite a sight.

Perast has followed the Venetian tradition of building soaring churches on many of the small islands that overlook the town, including the Island of St. George where the 12th Century Benedictine monastery of St. George is located, and the neighboring island of Gospa od Skrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock). The abbey on the Island of St. George was reputedly built in the 9th Century and is a testament to Perast’s rich architectural history, which is unparalleled in the region
