Another festival is over and done with. I don't want to be a total curmudgeon about it since these things are rather fun, but they are also a lot of work especially when it comes to dealing with the public. We have begun to close down the area to all except local residents as far as vehicles are concerned and boy, oh boy what a kerfuffle that makes. "Who do you think you are?!", "We always used to be able to bring our cars down here before!", "You come from away people are nothing but trouble makers!", etc., etc. They seemed to forget that the people that live in the historical district of town don't deserve to have their lawns parked upon and their laneways blocked. They also forget that most of the visitors will be on foot so cars and trucks trying to push their way through the milling throngs simply isn't the best of ideas. Most people, though, were calm and accepting of the changes but there are always one or two who think that by complaining they can get their way.
In spite of that the Founders days went off very well except for the fact that both the boat parade of lights and fireworks
were delayed until the last possible day due to bad weather. In fact, on Saturday the whole thing was shut down due to a severe thunderstorm warning. In the end nothing happened other than a quiet night at the festival but better safe than sorry I guess. Part of the festival is that 18th century campsite with re-enactors living pretty much as the first settlers or Port Roseway Associates would have back in 1783. Campaign tents are set up with campfires to cook the food. Men women and children live in the tents for the weekend and answer questions from folks that come to view the campsite. Plus they have a couple of scenarios that they go though each year - several parades, a pirate attack, etc. Good harmless fun. Add to that the organizers have entertainment, a greased pole contest, lobster box racing, canoe jousting, as well as vendors booths and other things taking place in the various businesses and it makes for a busy weekend.
For us what it meant was that as I said in a previous post that we didn't get away in Nelleke as hoped. Regardless, we still enjoyed ourselves and Kayt and young fellow showed up on Friday evening in preparation for his attending the WetFeet Sailing Course beginning this morning.
