Home Again
Well, here we are, back in the old hacienda after a rollicking trip to Ottawa and Barrie, going through Canada on the way up and back through the US on the way home, and I must say there were things that I would rather have been doing.
In a previous post I mentioned that we went in to see Mom in her new digs in the retirement home and that was less than a pleasant experience. It was great to seem Mom but I am not sure if she saw us, or at least from the time after we left. Physically and mentally she is not what or anything even close to what she used to be. I know a few people in her age range who are active, alert and involved and the horrible lottery that so many people come out on the losing end of can have them a going concern right up to the moment they pass on or they can whimper away. Unfortunately most do the latter. For me I devoutly hope that when my time comes I will be somewhere in my 90s and will be shot by a jealous husband who caught me in bed with his 25 year old wife. Ah well. You take what you get I suppose.
From there we drove up to Barrie which is just north of Toronto to see our son’s new place and to meet his new roomies. The town is much more of a going concern that where he was before – Springhill, NS, and isn’t so large as to make you feel insignificant as you do in a place like Toronto or Montreal. We went out for dinner twice while we were there and had a cruise through their Farmer’s Market on Saturday.
The on Monday we started off on the drive back. The GPS took us through Niagra Falls and down to Boston and across the border at Calais, MA before heading back to Shelburne. We broke the trip into two ten hour slogs in Mass. And stayed in an Econolodge which was both inexpensive and also allowed our dog. I must say that he (the dog) did an awful lot of sniffing about which didn’t fill us with too much confidence about the cleanliness of the place but we escaped without being bitten or anything and we did get a sleep. We were back home by 2130 last night and back in the comfort of our own little bed and slept through to 0800 – a real sleep in for us.
Today we started to get back into the routine. We aren’t completely there yet but we have picked up the mail, pruned back the grape vines and got a letter that told me that the Federal Government owes me $800, which is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Just in time for Christmas!
