Walking boots
23 April 2009 | Aghios Nikolaos, Crete
It has been a long time since we went walking in the hills of Sri Lanka. Since then, and particularly during our final slog up the Red Sea getting stuck in marsas unable to get ashore, we have been dreaming of arriving in Crete and putting our walking boots back on.
This island is renowned for its wonderful mountain and gorge walks. As soon as we arrived here, we bought a book of local walks and set off with Ian and Viv to do some exploring. On our first walk we discovered that at this time of year the mountains are covered in wild flowers and the weather is just about perfect!
It felt fantastic to be stretching our legs again, although lack of serious exercise for so long had unsurprisingly left us all very unfit so we all had to stop and admire the view a lot on the uphill climbs!
