real Americans

We motored to an anchorage and as we were headed to explore in our dinghy we were hailed over by a man swimming to meet us. He wondered if we were 'real' Americans or if our boat just flew the flag. Turns out a lot of people use the American flag and/or the BVI flag on their boat for tax purposes or what other kind of purposes we're not fully sure. So the big question on the sea is, 'is that really their nationality or not?' The couple we met live in the USVI and have their beautiful 56 foot wooden yawl in the Med. It is always a wonderful experience to meet others, enjoy hospitality together and then bless each other with good sailing salutations. The only regret is I didn't do a group selfie-the thing folks do these days...oh well next time.
