Reaching the North Coast

After a night of howling winds, we woke to calm seas and mild to no wind. We weighed anchor at 0738 and motored to get around the point. We hoisted the sails hoping for a puff of wind and sheltering under the shade they offered. The outcropping of large rocks is amazing. It is no wonder Homer had such an imagination of monsters in the sea as we create creatures from the shapes we see. We motor sail until 1304 when we finally shut of the engine and are running on a close reach at 5-6 knots. We arrive at our destination Spinalongas at 1530. We drop the dinghy, zip over to the island and spend the next few hours touring the site. The Island had been a Venetian fort in the 13th century, then occupied by the Ottoman Empire and then turned into a leper colony until it was closed in 1973. A novel was written about the leper years and the island has been quite popular since. Settled down for the night with no wind and quiet surroundings.
