Cormorant Pass, Great Barrier Reef

19 August 2014 | Lizard Island and Ribbon Reef 10, GBR
Russ and Laurie
Once we heard that the repair of the locks at our destination marina in Darwin might be delayed, we decided to stay an extra day at Lizard Island enjoying it's many attractions. We snorkeled the Clam Garden, with many giant clams and large schools of colorful reef fish. The giant clams are just amazing and we're glad to see they are still growing and protected. We took a second hike up to the top of Cooks Lookout as the sky was completely clear, and we were rewarded with horizon to horizon views of the reef and it's many passages, as well as the reefs surrounding Lizard Island and the mainland. It's a cardiac workout but well worth it! Last night, we turned the underwater lights on NEXUS on, and had 5 giant trevali swimming around our boat. This morning we left the harbor as the sun was getting high, and sailed out to Cormorant Pass on the Great Barrier Reef. We reached the pass as low slack tide had just happened and the pass began a gentle 2-3kt inbound current and we took turns drift snorkeling the pass with the tender. It was really beautiful, a three dimensional view with plentiful larger fish and some beautiful corals. Many of the corals were damaged by the cyclone four months ago, but the reef was full of life nonetheless and the water was crystal clear. We were only able to linger about two hours before the current began to build stronger, but we enjoyed every minute of it. We are now on our passage to Cape York and the little aboriginal town of Seisia just on the west side of the cape, which is the northernmost part of Australia. We are trying to time our arrival so we can sail through Alegany pass at slack tide, high noon, as it is supposed to be beautiful but can have rip tides currents of up to 15kts. We'll see how it goes!
