Finally some headwind?! At 9:58PDT (4:58NZDT) Niemis texted that they were in Neah Bay and plan to leave land tomorrow morning for the 23-day crossing to Hawaii. They are looking forward to a sunny, downwind passage. What fun!

Fri May 28 23:13:00 EDT 2010, Victoria, BC
The entire crew is in Victoria, ready for the start of the race tomorrow morning. There are a few final instructions we'll be discussing in the morning, but for the most part we are ready to sail. The weather was not great today, 10C and occasional light showers, but the forecast is for clearing over the weekend. The winds should be strong at the start, giving us a good chance to get across the Straight of Juan de Fuca before the currents change. Everybody is quite excited and even though Fa, Hank and I are all pretty sleep deprived, we are finding it difficult to get to sleep.

Wed May 26 13:47:56 EDT 2010, Dunedin, NZ
The day has finally arrived for Hank and me to fly to Victoria to meet Gary and the crew for the Swiftsure yacht race, http://www.swiftsure.org/. We have a full crew of 8 for the overnight race, so it will be nice to see old friends and make some new ones. I am just hoping that we adjust to the time difference quick enough to be of help on the race during watches. After the Memorial weekend race, Gary, Hank, and I will make our final journey back to Olympia for provisioning. Corinna is joining us to lend a hand too! If all goes well and the weather holds, we plan to depart Puget Sound at the end of the first week of June for Hilo.
Many thanks to all of our friends and family (and especially my mum!) who have made this grand adventure possible. While we are offshore, we'll be texting brief messages to Ginny who will keep the position updated on the blog. Here we go....
