Happy New Year, Everyone!

Taking a breather ...

Since we'll be off the boat during July and August, we plan to post only three times per week. The Captain will continue writing a practical Blue View post each week, we'll keep you up to date on what's happening with us and then throw in some cruising nuggets as well.

Keeping fit

We’ve written before about keeping fit on the boat. David is so much better at a regimented exercise program than I am. I have all the best intentions, but I can always think of something better to do than sit-ups, push-ups, leg lifts and running in place. It doesn’t take much to distract me. Walking, [...]

Happy 240th Birthday, America

Growing up in New England, I took for granted just how lovely a summer’s morning can be in Massachusetts. It’s comfortably cool and everything smells clean and fresh. Spider webs glisten with morning dew and it’s just great to be alive and breathe in the new day. Being back at Lin’s house conjures up wonderful childhood memories of summer mornings past. And this is not just any morning … it’s the 4th of July, the best holiday of the summertime in the USA.

Leaving Cups and a Road Trip

Leaving Nine of Cups is never easy. We know she’ll pout while we’re gone and so we do our best to make sure she’s as comfortable as possible before we leave. We were whirling dervishes trying to get everything ready.

Hunting & Gathering - Virginia Beach

We had lots to do before leaving Cups. David was intent on getting as many chores done in advance of our departure as possible so that once we return in September, we can spend time sailing in the Chesapeake rather than doing repairs and maintenance. Much of what we needed in the way of parts and supplies, [...]

Countdown in progress

Marcie
We were up early in hopes of getting another load of laundry done and out on the line before we left to pick up the rental car. No luck...the marina's single washer was in use and at the beginning of its cycle. No matter...we'll figure something out. We managed to get a few chores done before our gracious morning chauffeur, Tony on "Westwind" arrived and whisked us away to the big city...Hobart.

The rental car was ready for us and the first place we headed was Peter Johnston's, the big chandlery in Hobart city. Located across from the waterfront, we had a quick look at the city and a longer look at what the chandlery had to offer. In particular, we were looking for an odd lift-off fastener stud that had disintegrated when we removed the dodger for repair. We were pleasantly surprised when they had the exact, rather obscure item we needed. Of course, it took us much longer to get through the rest of the store to see what was available (most everything) and the prices (ouch!). Though we were in a rush of sorts, the cafe next to the chandlery was too much of an attraction to deny and we relaxed a bit over a flat white and planned the rest of the day.

After a quick look around, we headed back to the marina to pick up all that dirty laundry. The nearby town of Kingston had a laundramat and we ate a quick lunch while the washers and dryers did their thing and were back at the marina with clean, dry laundry by 2pm. We hadn't finished packing yet and we got into it with significant resolve. Our friends on Xantia stopped by quickly for a cuppa and any instructions. They're watching the boat while we're away and offered to air her out a bit on fair days.

We were busy the rest of day, frantically trying to figure out what we'd need, what would fit, what we were forgetting. We had a list of all the lists we'd made and still we were adding more items to lists to be ticked off. At 6:30, we headed up to the Oyster Cove Inn pub to meet Aussie friends from Moonshine whom we'd met in Cygnet. An historic old place from the 19th century, the inn is just a short pathway up the hill. The blazing fireplace was most welcome on a crisp night. We enjoyed a pub meal and good conversation and all too soon it was time to head back to a very chilly boat.

Tomorrow...we'll finish up the last minute details and zip up Cups for the winter.
