Taking a breather ...

Since we'll be off the boat during July and August, we plan to post only three times per week. The Captain will continue writing a practical Blue View post each week, we'll keep you up to date on what's happening with us and then throw in some cruising nuggets as well.

Keeping fit

We’ve written before about keeping fit on the boat. David is so much better at a regimented exercise program than I am. I have all the best intentions, but I can always think of something better to do than sit-ups, push-ups, leg lifts and running in place. It doesn’t take much to distract me. Walking, [...]

Happy 240th Birthday, America

Growing up in New England, I took for granted just how lovely a summer’s morning can be in Massachusetts. It’s comfortably cool and everything smells clean and fresh. Spider webs glisten with morning dew and it’s just great to be alive and breathe in the new day. Being back at Lin’s house conjures up wonderful childhood memories of summer mornings past. And this is not just any morning … it’s the 4th of July, the best holiday of the summertime in the USA.

Leaving Cups and a Road Trip

Leaving Nine of Cups is never easy. We know she’ll pout while we’re gone and so we do our best to make sure she’s as comfortable as possible before we leave. We were whirling dervishes trying to get everything ready.

Hunting & Gathering - Virginia Beach

We had lots to do before leaving Cups. David was intent on getting as many chores done in advance of our departure as possible so that once we return in September, we can spend time sailing in the Chesapeake rather than doing repairs and maintenance. Much of what we needed in the way of parts and supplies, [...]

Cups' New Digs - Atlantic Yacht Basin

We had lots of questions and the folks at Atlantic Yacht Basin (AYB) had all the right answers. Yes, they had room for Nine of Cups now until early September and they would make accommodation for her to stay a few months in late autumn till after Christmas as well. Their rates? About half of what we [...]

An afternoon with Buffalo Bill

31 May 2012 | Denver, CO, USA
Marcie
We spent the morning doing chores, a little business and finishing up preparation for our upcoming weekend camping trip with our youngest son, Brad and his family. Miracle of miracles, we were done early and after a quick internet consult, we decided to head up to the top of Lookout Mountain with grandson, Taylor, for a look-see.

Lookout Mountain has been a part of Denver's mountain park system since 1889 and consists of ~65 acres of evergreen wilderness atop the mountain named for its being a favored lookout point of the native Ute Indian tribe. It's also the burial site of the internationally famous western frontiersman Buffalo Bill Cody.

We picnicked first. David & Taylor practiced throwing the boomerang we'd brought him from Australia with good success...it did indeed come back. We headed to Buffalo Bill's gravesite. The old guy has got a crackerjack view of the city from his vantage point. The Buffalo Bill Museum is there as well and we enjoyed not only the memorabilia from Bill's Wild West Shows, but also the chance to get a little crazy, dress up like cowboys, rope a calf and mount a leg-less (shorter for the kids that way) horse!

A short distance away, down the mountain in Morrison, is Dinosaur Ridge, known for its local dinosaur fossils. We checked out the tiny museum there, then took a walk up the sandstone ridge for spectacular views of the city.

Tomorrow...the camping trip. We're anxious to see how these old bodies adapt to sleeping on the ground. We're aching already.
