Taking a breather ...
Since we'll be off the boat during July and August, we plan to post only three times per week. The Captain will continue writing a practical Blue View post each week, we'll keep you up to date on what's happening with us and then throw in some cruising nuggets as well.

Happy 240th Birthday, America
Growing up in New England, I took for granted just how lovely a summer’s morning can be in Massachusetts. It’s comfortably cool and everything smells clean and fresh. Spider webs glisten with morning dew and it’s just great to be alive and breathe in the new day. Being back at Lin’s house conjures up wonderful childhood memories of summer mornings past. And this is not just any morning … it’s the 4th of July, the best holiday of the summertime in the USA.

Spinning our wheels and other exercises
He called Rashid and explained what we needed. Before David could fully explain, Rashid said "Oh, yes. No problem. Take off the part and give it to me. I'll have one made." No, this didn't bode well. It needed to be stainless and exact and David didn't want to remove the old end piece if he wasn't assured he'd get exactly what he needed. He really wanted to talk to the machinist. David asked Rashid if he would call the machinist for him. "Not necessary. Don't worry," said Rashid. David was worried. After much dickering back and forth, David took photos of the part he needed and went with Rashid to the machinist's workplace, a small garage in an industrial warren in town. He took a convoluted route through a maze of tiny streets and ended up 10 minutes later at the machinists. Perhaps, the machinist could do it; bring in the original piece. He would figure out a price when he was done. Nope, that won't work. Rashid charged David 500 Rps ($18) for the trip and advice. David was less than pleased. Ouch!
After much aggravation trying to remove the end piece without damaging it any further, David concluded he'd wait to South Africa for this repair. An entire morning wasted, not to mention $18 down the drain for naught. That's how it goes sometime on a boat. You spin your wheels, but you don't get anywhere. We'll move on to more productive chores.
Happy Hallowe'en, by the way. No masks or trick-or-treating for us, but we'll find a way to celebrate one way or the other.
