On Route to South Geargia at last!

Good Morning,

Northanger and crew are about 20 miles south of Staten Island, motor sailing in light southwest winds, the moon peaking out intermittently behind dark squall clouds. To the west, red and orange light marks the horizon where the sun will soon rise.

After three years in the planning, we are finally on our way to South Georgia! Hayley Shepard and Beth Anne Masselink are aboard, along with Magnus O'Grady, Greg and myself. Hayley has a dream; to kayak solo around the Island of South Georgia and through her blog, writings, film and lectures, she hopes to raise awareness about the plight of the albatross. The rest of us are here to help her achieve this goal.

As with any voyage of this magnitude, so many people have helped us in many ways to prepare - through gear, services, technical support, moral support and lending a hand here and there where they can. Thank you Jonathon, Roxana, Luis,Tim Karel, Milton, Cristian, Ivan, Debs, David, Maureen, Jamie and Casey (the watch keepers seat is the cats meow!), and of course, Mom and Dad and everyone else whom I may have missed.

There are about 8 more days at sea before we arrive in South Georgia. The weather forecast is showing light north westerlies before a calm spell, and then moderate south westerlies picking up about the 4th. Not bad weather for the Southern Ocean. Our course will take us south of Burwood back, towards Shag Rocks and then make landfall on the north end of the island.

Yesterday, we say a very large long line fishing vessel, just as we were exiting the Beagle Channel. What was impressive about it was the number of albatross, giant petrels and petrels following behind the boat, the cloud of soaring birds extending for at least a half a mile in the wake. Further behind, more birds floated in the water. I recognized blackbrowed albatross, giant petrel and also a majestic wandering albatross. One wonders how many those birds are caught up in the fishing lines each day?

It is now nearly six in the morning and time for me to wake Greg up for his watch and time for me to get some kip.

All for now,

Keri
