Our last few days in South Carolina
18 April 2016 | South Carolina
From Isle of Palms we were now making our way to Georgetown, SC. This section is extremely shallow and needs to be timed to the tide. Even then, there is not quite enough water! The shallow section is not long, but a challenge, we approached slowly and ran aground in soft mud and silt. We backed off, moved over and found about 7 feet of water but not for long! We ploughed our way through the next quarter mile, showing 4'8" on our depth sounder - we draw 5'5"! The water continued to be just 6-7 feet for the next hour or so. We reached Georgetown, SC at about 4 pm planning to anchor but there were so many boats on moorings, we took the easy way out and took a dock. Docking is severely cutting into our budget - we really need to anchor more often!
Monday, April 18th and we are at another dock - but at least a cheaper one! We are at Osprey Marina, Myrtle Beach. We decided since the boat needs a wash and its time to change the oil that this would be a good stop. They offer true southern hospitality - friendly, helpful - a gift bag of goodies, breakfast in the morning - what's not to like! Last night was one of the coolest nights we've had at 10 C, but today it is 30C and sunny and we are looking for shade!
Tomorrow we will cross the state line into North Carolina.
