Waiting for Weather
10 January 2013 | Nassau, Bahamas
January 10th - We've spent a busy few days in Nassau and are still docked at the marina. The winds have picked up again which means the waves and current are stronger. Truant and Whish are both still anchored but neither slept much last night. At the dock, there is quite a bit of rocking and rolling and we are still learning how to tie to the dock given that the tide is about 3.5 feet. It makes getting on and off the boat onto the fixed docks a challenge at both low and high tide.
Today we walked through the old part of town, which is almost abandoned in favour of the tourist town at the cruise ship docks. It is filled with gift shops, jewellery stores and high end designer products. There is a new marina being built in the old town with the hopes that it will begin a revitalization of the area. A treat after that was a visit to Potter's Cay. It's a shanty town along the fishing docks under the bridge to Paradise Island. You can buy fish, conch, lobster and crab right off the boat from the fisherman and there are several fresh produce stalls as well. Most of the fisherman have little food stands that sell their catch - seems to be mostly conch salad since it doesn't require cooking - and they all sell beer! We had one vendor show us how to clean a conch and serve it with hot peppers, lime juice and salt - raw! Ron tried it and liked it - I'm not so into raw fish!
On the way back to the boat we met Jeff and Donna , Whish, who stopped by our boat for a drink before heading back to their own boat.
