More wind, more high tides
26 April 2013 | Isle of Hope & Savannah, Georgia
Tuesday, April 23rd – Thursday, April 25th – Tuesday was a much nicer day, although still cool and we headed out early for Isle of Hope on the outskirts of Savannah. It was a long day, 59.3 miles and much of it against the tide, sometimes travelling at only 3 knots! The tides in Georgia are 8 to 9 feet but these last few days with the new moon, they have been over 10 feet. We arrived at the marina just before dark. The next day we took advantage of their courtesy car and their laundry and stayed another night.
On Thursday morning we hosed the salt off the boat, fuelled up, pumped out and made our way to Savannah where we had reserved a dock right in the historical riverfront district. We were quite surprised that all around is quite industrial and container ships and tugs are moving constantly up and down the river. The historical area of the waterfront is quaint and very old but otherwise houses the usual tourist shops selling t-shirts and souvenirs. We did walk through several blocks of the historical area, saw the Pirate House built in 1754 and mentioned in Treasure Island and had dinner at the Shrimp House which was very good. Our plan had been to stay two nights, but we both think one is enough. Next stop will be in South Carolina. The picture is of one of many cobblestone streets; cobbled with stones that provided ballast in the ships hold.
