The End of Chesapeake bay
17 October 2014 | Deltaville, VA
We arrived in Deltaville last night and expect to be off the Chesapeake today or tomorrow when we join the ICW at Norfolk, Virginia.
We were a day later than planned leaving Annapolis when Ron got bad dinghy fuel, and spent an entire day getting the engine to run again! The fuel was about 15% water! From Annapolis, we travelled to Solomon's Island where we picked up a mooring ball for the night. There are so many sailboats here, it is hard to see through the forest of masts! Heavy rain in the morning kept us here a second night.
We left Solomon's early in the morning hoping to make Deltaville but Mother Nature had other plans! Checking the chart plotter, we found a closer anchorage and ended up behind Sandy Point on the Great Wicomico River for two nights while severe thunderstorms passed through. We got the heavy rain but no thunder or lightning. Buddy celebrated his first birthday here on Tuesday, Oct. 15th. Wednesday morning was calm and sunny and we were treated to a view of dolphins playing all around us in the bay.
We arrived in Deltaville at noon on Thursday and just as we docked I did something I know better than to do - I jumped onto the dock when the boat was a little too far off - and fell in! My first swim in the Chesapeake! At least I can say it was as warm or warmer than Georgian Bay this summer! Nothing hurt except my pride.
Through all of the rain and wind, temperatures have remained warm - mid 20's during the day and 10-15 at night.
So, here it is Friday and we are ready to leave when we discover the pumpout we got yesterday didn't pump anything out and we are still full! We are at the dock still as Ron works to find the problem. This is a nice spot to be stuck at least. The oyster season just opened here and all the boats are out on the Rappahannock River. Every kind of seafood is available in town.
