North and South Carolina
01 November 2014 | St. James to Georgetown
Monday, October 27th - It is another very warm day - by afternoon we were looking for shady spots! Not complaining! This stretch of the ICW doesn't have many places to anchor so we travelled to St. James Plantation, a beautiful marina surrounded by lovely homes with good washrooms and laundry.
On Tuesday, we crossed into South Carolina and docked at Barefoot Landing. There is a shopping mall right at the dock! Other than groceries and boat supplies this is the first shopping in months. Well it turned out to be mostly t-shirts and souvenirs so it didn't cost us anything. We did have a very good southern bbq at one of the restaurants.
Wednesday was again a beautiful day. We travelled by several potential anchorages but none of them have good shore access for Buddy. We decided to keep going to Georgetown, making this a 50 mile day. Georgetown is very industrial with both a steel and paper mill (the stinky kind of paper mill). The harbour was very disappointing - it is filled with many derelict boats, many that look beyond saving, some still have someone living onboard. We found an anchoring spot and had a very quiet night. The town itself is very quaint with lots of small shops and restaurants.
This section of the ICW travels through a cypress swamp. It would be impossible to get to shore anywhere through here. It seemed fitting that it is almost Halloween since the big old cypress trees draped with spanish moss look very creepy!
