Charleston to Beaufort, SC
12 November 2014 | Beaufort, SC
Sunday, Nov. 2nd - As we left Charleston, it was still very windy and cold. There isn't much in this section besides marsh, so we chose a spot to anchor on Steamboat Creek and were able to tuck in behind a few trees for wind protection Temperatures are forecast to be 4 degrees tonight.
Monday was as cold as predicted in the morning, but the sun was shining and the winds were light. There are several shallow areas today where we will have to anchor and wait for a rising tide. As we approached the Ashpoo-Coosaw Cut at low tide, we were just preparing to anchor when a tug came up behind us. His draft was over 7 feet and he kindly offered to go first and plow a path through. We tucked in behind him, along with two other sailboats and slowly made our way. Several times he got stuck and had to back up and take a run at it - he saved us a lot of time and we arrived in Beaufort, SC in the early afternoon. By afternoon it had warmed up nicely and on Tuesday, our second day in Beaufort, we were back in shorts.
We restocked in the morning, then spent the afternoon walking through town. Beaufort is very old, filled with antebellum homes, and live oak hanging with spanish moss...its just beautiful! On the main street, sitting on a bench waiting for the bus was a Forrest Gump impersonator, looking very much like Tom Hanks in the movie. The movie was filmed in this area and he does special events all around South Carolina. That evening we ate out and our waiter, a local fellow taught us all about shrimp - how to catch them, clean them, cook them and freeze them. It was a perfect finish to our visit to Beaufort.
