Stuck in Bimini
03 January 2015 | Alicetown, North Bimini
Monday night, December 29th we anchored at No Name Harbour. We spent the morning with Ron taking Buddy to the vet while I got groceries before we headed out. It was very crowded, and many of the boat owners clearly had more money than boat experience...huge boats; no boat handling skill!
We were up and on our way at 4:45 am in the dark. I had laid a track on our plotter when we came by here yesterday so we had a route to follow out to open water. The crossing was beautiful. We could have used a little wind to sail but otherwise it was calm, sunny and warm and we arrived in Bimini about 2 pm and docked at Blue Water Resort. Check in with Customs and Immigration was easy and still $150. We had heard rumours it was now $300.
In hindsight, we should have carried on further rather than stop here - because we are still here and will be for a few more days as we wait for the weather to calm. Bimini is actually closer to the US than it is to other Bahamian Islands. We still have about 100 miles across the Bahama Bank which means we have to anchor for one night out of sight of land on the shallow bank before reaching the Berrie Islands, Andros or Nassau. We are hoping that Monday will be a good day - it looks like there could be a three day window.
So, meanwhile we sit, go to the beach to collect sea glass and have a swim, wander through the small town, play cards, take dinghy rides and visit with other boaters. I guess no one at home is feeling sorry for us!
