From the Berries to Nassau
10 January 2016 | Nassau Harbour Club, Nassau
We spent until Friday, January 8th in Great Harbour Cay and when it was time to leave we very nearly decided to stay another week or two. Everything we had read about it is true - there is so much to do in and around the marina - fishing, snorkeling, dinghy exploring, beachcombing, potlucks eating out and the marina is clean and reasonably priced. The staff is all incredibly friendly and helpful.
Tuesday and Wednesday were not the best weather days - lots of rain, but it did end in time for pizza night at the Gazebo with Polly and Dave, Illusions and Phyllis and Tom, Cocoon Too. Every Wednesday, Hector comes in and cooks pizza - $25 for a large with everything! We spent Thursday seeing some of the sights. We took Buddy to a sandbar that uncovers at low tide and let him run. Later we walked to the beautiful beach about 20 minutes away. There were hardly any people on the beach and the sand is fine and white, almost like powder!
Friday morning we headed for Hoffman's Cay, entering at the south end at Devil's Cay. The water is not as deep as the chart suggests and after a light touch on the bottom we found a clear sand spot and set the anchor - for the first time it took two tries to set the Rocna. Between the winds gusting to 25 knots, and the surge and current from the tide, it was not a restful night!
Next morning, Saturday, although we would be on open ocean and it looked a bit rough we decided it was the better alternative so about 8:45 we headed for Nassau. It was rolly but manageable and once we hoisted a sail we made really good time. We arrived at Nassau Harbour about 3:00 and docked at the Harbour Club. Our neighbour for the night was Phil on Long Winded, who we met last year in Georgetown and rafted with this year in Vero Beach.
We spent Sunday in Nassau cleaning the boat, refueling and provisioning. Tomorrow we'll head into the Exumas.
