George Town, Exuma...at last!
21 January 2016 | George Town, Exuma
Finally, on January 18th we were able to leave Warderick Wells with a weather report forecasting two days in a row of good weather! All of the boats that had been waiting, left and headed south. We headed for Black point Settlement, one of our favourite anchorages. It's still windy but at least we have sun today. On the second day, 2 Outrageous arrived. After having Conch Fritters for lunch at Rockside Laundry, we joined Laurie and Paul at Scorpio's for Happy Hour and dinner. It was still fairly windy so there was only a small group but it did include folks we met last year on Apsara.
Wednesday, January 20th was forecast to be last good day to travel for three or four days. Several of us all left 7 am for the 50 mile run on the ocean to George Town. We learned a very valuable lesson that morning. We had heard about rages but never experienced one. This is when the wind opposes the tide at a narrow opening from the shallow bank to the ocean...now we know and we'll never do that again! All of us made it through and the rest of the trip was easy by comparison - rolly but sunny and we were able to sail. We had our anchor safety rope break, the anchor jumped from the roller and banged on the hull, leaving a few scuffs; another boat had all their anchor, chain and rode go over and anchor them in the middle of the rage - they had to cut their rode, leaving behind the anchor and 100 feet of chain! So, we are now all safely anchored in George Town and once again we are waiting for another front. Because of the weather, there are far fewer boats here this year - many still waiting in Bimini and Nassau. We expect to stay for a week or two - not the seven weeks we spent here last year!
