To Norman's Cay and Nassau
18 February 2016 | Nassau
Tuesday, February 16th - It's a beautiful day and we are off to Norman's Cay. We were able to sail the entire 20 miles flying the DRS - the first time this season! We anchored next to Stargazer VII, Michele and his guest Soo. After taking a look at the nearby sunken DC-3 which crashed during the drug smuggling days in the late 70's, we had happy hour aboard Stargazer VII. Norman's Cay has quite a history of cocaine smuggling by Columbian Carlos Lehder, whose father is said to be a Nazi that escaped to Columbia.
Wednesday began as a very overcast day, but by noon the sun came out and it was warm with just a light wind. We motorsailed about half way to Nassau - about 20 nautical miles - until the motor quit! For the next few hours we drifted around while Ron diagnosed the problem. Had we been stuck, it is only 12-20 feet deep so we could have anchored but bad fuel turned out to be the culprit. After blowing out the lines, we were once again underway. We did stop long enough for a quick swim to cool off. We arrived at Nassau Harbour Club just at dark. Michele had lined up a dock for us. We tied up and brought pizza back for the four of us for dinner.
