High & Dry in Lagos

08 February 2008 | Lagos Portugal
Paul Wise
As those of you who read our blog are aware, for the past week we have been left high and dry in Lagos. It has been very frustrating for us and we have lapsed into a routine that has begun to get us down. Andy has even threatened to get his wetsuit, or is that knob head suit, out and go surfing. To some people our routine of getting up late, going for a leisurely breakfast and then returning to the boat to read and potter about ( Rachael- let me say that Andy is a dab hand at polishing and cleaning ), will probably seem like something of a good thing, but let me tell you, it is mind numbingly boring. It is great for the first couple of days, as you get out of the watch system, but then you long to have something to stimulate you (no rude comments). The hardest part of all, has been trying to keep on top of the boatyard and to make sure that we didn't end up just another boat laid up on the hard. We have had to follow/pester the owner so much, it has been unreal. However, I suppose that is the way they work here and it is something we/Andy must get use to, as it is in their culture and I am sure we will come across it a lot more on our travels. This could be especially so in the Caribbean, if we/he needs any repairs done. It has not been all bad though, as I have managed to explore the old town, which is very pretty and we have managed to eat lovely food every night. We found a lovely local restaurant that was good value, served great food and was very friendly. Today our spirits have been raised greatly and it was not through excess alcohol. It was all down to the Raymarine equipment coming back from Lisbon, either repaired, or as brand new parts. Also, the new lift pump for the engine turned up today. These have now been fitted and we are set to perform sea trials tomorrow morning, to test everything and to re-calibrate the systems. If everything goes well during the trials, we will take on fuel and water, re-provision the boat and finally set off on leg 3 for Gran Canary. At the moment we have everything crossed for an early Sunday morning departure. We are hoping and praying that will be the case.

About: These three partners in crime first embarked on their marine adventures exactly 12 months ago at a well known sailing school in The Medina, Cowes. After testing the patience of every instructor, they eventually passed out with enough knowledge to make it back to the mainland.
Extra:
Their quest for adventure has since taken them across many small oceans, until this January they have teamed up once more for the big one! Armed with a blessing, carrot cakes, a few charts, and the love from Rachel, Lucy, and Lorraine ,(individually rather than collectively!), they are seeking a [...]
