Carving the wild Calabash

14 May 2008 | Hog Isle Grenada
Scott/Jean
Calabash Carving. What is a calabash you ask? If you have ever wondered this is your lucky day. Here in the islands the calabash is used to make bowls and cups. The fruit is composed of an extremely hard outer shell with a pulpy seed filled center. It is poisonous to eat the fruit but the shell once dried and varnished can be used to serve food. At the local markets you will see wonderfully carved and colored bowls and masks made of the calabash. We had to give it a try our selves. A local boatman found us a couple of calabash and with the help of a friend we sawed in half, cleaned and carved our calabash. It was quite a process but a lot of fun on the beach with friends.
