AWFUL

04 December 2012 | Little Matacoumbe, Keys
Ellen, sunny 75
We left Key Biscayne yesterday, against our better judgement. We felt in our guts that we should not go, but we did anyway. It was AWFUL! We got exactly what NOAA radio said we were going to have. ENE 20 knots, 4 to 5 foot seas occasional 7 foot, waves 4 seconds apart. Hawks Channel is shallow inside the reef, we were in 15 to 20 feet of water which causes very steep or square waves. I immediately became nauseous and stayed that way for the first four hours. Sophie did amazing, I can't not say enough about that cat. our intention was to anchor at Rodrigues Key which would have been a 50 mile day. When we got there, there was no protection from the wind so we had to continue another 25 miles. We finally anchored at 6pm in the dark with a foot of water under the keel. we promptly both did a couple finger full of moonshine. We are staying put here till the conditions improve, either tomorrow or the next day. Days like yesterday make me so grateful for days like today, having the anchor set, reading and relaxing. We are clean, the boat is clean and we have plenty of books to read. We have plenty of water and power. We are in no hurry, nothing to dictate how fast we get somewhere. Sometimes I have to be reminded that it is not the destination, it is the journey. I may even pick up the ukulele today for bit. Today there is no place I would rather be than right here. Thank you for reading.
