John
Charisma and ourselves moved to a new anchorage on Tuesday, just in front of a little village called Naivindamu. It is the smallest of the villages here in Fulaga, and the people are so friendly. Ann and Bob have been in the Fulaga area for 2 months now, and have made a few day trips to this particular village, and so they know everyone's name now. Ann is still working on getting all the birthday's memorized, and their family tree written down - but she is getting close! So they are no longer pulangis (what they call us white folk), but now have their own island names. And everyone in all 3 villages know and love Ann and Bob. It sure makes it easy for John and I to quickly get accepted and immersed with village life. John is also becoming know for his skills at repairing sewing machines. There are 3-4 hand-cranked sewing machines in each of the 3 villages - almost all in need of some sort of repair. And word is out that John is a master sewing machine fixer - his reputation i s preceding him! So when we showed up in Naivindamu, the ladies asked him to work his magic on 2 more machines. With all the sewing machines coming our way from all the villages, he has only deemed one of them "inoperable" so far. The village ladies love him!
Yesterday Moses, the chief of Naivindamu, along with 2 of his younger assistants Sailosi and Mattai (2 cute little boys from the village) took us on a hike to a remote beach on the other side of the island. After trekking 40 minutes through plantations and a jungle filled with coconut trees, we emerged onto one of the most beautiful white sand beaches we have ever seen. The beach and water were absolutely stunning! Ann and I have decided we are going to start our own village there along with a few of our village lady friends - we would have a blast! After doing some shell hunting and enjoying a stroll through the water's edge we tucked back into some shade under the coconut trees and Moses prepared a drinking coconut for each of us as we enjoyed the scenery. Then we trekked the 40 minutes back - much of the path lying over very sharp coral rock formations within the jungle - with Moses and the 2 boys barefoot the entire way. Ouch!! But wow - these guys have some tough feet! I think they could walk on broken glass and not even bat an eye! And I get all wimpy and whiney when I get a little sliver in my toe!
