One Week in Denarau

25 October 2014 | Port Denarau, Fiji
Lisa / Overcast and a little cooler today

An evening view towards the mega yachts from Orcinius.

We've been at the dock in Port Denarau for almost a week now. John has been getting tons of stuff done on Orcinius, and I basically do my part by staying out of his way! Actually, now that he is done with occupying the cockpit with his chores, it is time to drag out the sewing machine and I will begin knocking off my sewing assignments this week. It also looks like a good weather window starting on Monday/Tuesday for boats heading to New Zealand for the end of the cruising season. That means Bob and Ann will probably be on their way as well. I think we will be going through withdrawals when they leave as we have spent most everyday hanging out, and every evening meal together for the past couple of months since we joined up in Fulaga. But we are already making plans to have them come up to Vancouver to visit us in January - yahoo!

We had a fun evening this past week having David and Jui and their siblings (all from Fulaga but now living in Nadi) on board for a pizza and music night. David plays a mean ukulele and Bob and I are in need of a Fijian strumming lesson from him. We had a fun night watching Bob and Ann's video they made of Fulaga, and then jamming in the cockpit making sure no one on any nearby boat got to sleep before 9pm. (9pm is late for us cruisers!).

The party is just getting started on Orcinius.

John's incredible pizza dough is ready to burst out of the bowl!

Let the jamming begin! We passed the ukes, my guitar, and John's drum all the way around and everyone took their turn at strummin' and drummin'.

I think this was "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"!

David demonstrating his fancy strumming technique.

Little Maka was having a blast listening to the music!

We had a pleasant surprise on Friday. David called to let us know Jasmine (from Fulaga) was in Port Denarau, at the dock getting ready to board the ferry to Musket Cove. Ann and I beat feet over there (the next main dock over), to say hello and give her a big hug. We only had a few minutes to visit with her as the boat was leaving soon. We didn't expect to see her again until we came back in March of next year. But Jasmine had decided to come to Viti Levu with her good friend Koro, who is due to have a baby in the next few months. (Normally the ladies come to Suva or Lautoka to have their babies at a hospital). Koro was afraid of going on the ocean passage from Fulaga on her own, so being the good friend Jasmine is, she tagged along with Koro and got her settled into Lautoka with family. And now she was on her way to Plantation Resort (Musket Cover area) to start work again sooner than she had planned. So John and I might do a day trip out to Musket Cove in the next few weeks to go visit her - if all our chores are getting done on schedule. We'll have to see.

We also went rum tasting, pizza eating, and beer drinking on Friday night with Deb and Don from Buena Vista (as well as Bob and Ann). We all headed over the golf course where the Fiji Rum company was, and each did a flight of tasters. Then we made our way next door where the pizza restaurant was jammed packed with people watching the rugby match on the big screens. It was a long wait for our pizzas, but they were delicious. We all started the 25 minute walk back to the boats, but John was exhausted from working out in the heat all day so we nabbed a taxi half way and headed straight for bed. A long day topped by a fun evening out.

These next few weeks John will be working with David and his brother Malo to get Orcinius all ship shape and ready for cyclone season here in Denarau. Then, once we leave to go back home, we will have David come by Orcinius a few times a week to run engines, flush toilets, and do some general upkeep. It will be a good way for him to earn some extra cash - especially with a new baby on the way, and for us to have peace of mind that Orcinius will be well cared for.

All for now,
Lisa
