Georgia on my mind

I am pleased to report that it was another brilliant day on the waterway. Thank goodness there was no fog this morning - a dense fog advisory had been posted, but no sign of it when we woke up. We pulled away from the dock at 7.30am - still no sign of any attendants or of anyone who may want to collect payment from us. We negotiated the shoal areas that we couldn't do at low tide yesterday afternoon without incident. There are 8+ foot tides here so that really helps. We passed through at high tide and the depths we saw confirmed that we would have been well and truly stuck at low tide. Once the sun got up in the sky today it was HOT! Over 70 degrees - lovely. We passed over the Georgia state line making this the tenth state we have traveled through on this trip. Once again the landscape is changing - it is more subtropical now - an interesting mix of palm and cypress trees. The smells are different too. We keep catching a beautiful, almost sweet, scent on the air - we can't quite figure out what it is.

We have tied up at the Isle of Hope Marina and are spending three nights here so we can visit Savannah, which is about 9 miles away. Our cruising guide recommended stopping here rather than traveling up the Savannah River to the town itself. This avoids having to deal with the wicked currents on the river and dockage is much less expensive. All we have to do is walk to a nearby bus stop and we will be in Savannah in no time.
