My new book about Southeast Alaska, Glaciers, Bears and Totems: Sailing in Search of the Real Southeast Alaska has just been released by the publisher. In Seattle it's available at Armchair Sailor, Elliott Bay Book Company, and Captain's Nautical Supplies.
Why write a book instead of just a blog? Blogs are immediate; they transmit on-the-ground impressions about events or places. Books allow a writer to step back and give a more considered discussion. For this book I read over 100 other books and many articles about the places we visited. That reading enriched my writing by providing a more nuanced understanding of the subjects I wrote about. Glaciers, Bears and Totems is full of the history and natural history of Southeast Alaska. It's also full of stories, stories that were only partially visible when I was in the midst of them. Finally, a book is not just the work of the author but also the work of editors, layout professionals, map makers and proof readers. It's a work of art in its own right.
My event at Elliott Bay Book Company has been rescheduled to
