During my two weeks on Blue Skies I paged through several mega yacht magazines. The length of these boats are given in meters, not feet, with the largest stretching close to fifty (meters). Blue Skies is a "mere" forty-two feet but I don't feel the normal adage of "bigger is better" applies. Some of my favorite restaurants are tiny, hole-in-the-wall buildings that can barely seat twenty people. Their appeal is their limited space. Much like our enjoyment of a rainy day because it forces us to stay inside, there is a comfort to a place where every inch of space is utilized - "a place for everything and everything in its place". The mega yacht's abundance of space eliminates this need for efficiency and the character of the ship suffers. Most of their interiors lack an intimacy, feeling that they would look empty even with ten people onboard. The advantage Blue Skies has is that over time the processes and organization will continue to improve and this evolution will create layering and ultimately its unique character. The most important product of Blue Skies limited space, however, is the atmosphere it creates. It's a place where everyone needs to work together. Helping, sharing, and teamwork result in a positive, relaxed atmosphere that is a unique experience to be a part of. I look forward to returning in 2015!
