More catch ups before the BIG ONE starts....
13 January 2014 | West Cape Bay to Emu Bay KI
Terry - weather... ordinary
MONDAY DEC 16th - West Cape Bay to Emu Bay KI. -
We left West Cape Bay at sparrow flatulence yet again in order to make Kangaroo Island with plenty of time. Initially the plan was to go to Snug Cove but as the day wore on we figured that Emu Bay would be the go as it got us closer to our final destinations.
As is almost the norm now, the seas were rough and rocky and rolly and bfff, bfff, bfffy as Venture ploughed through the huge swell but at least the day was nice. I had worried about the possibility of being a little pukey but luckily it didn't eventuate, which was an absolute bonus on my part. Dave, however, almost had a corker of an accident when he was moving about the cockpit and we hit a particularly large wave, which lurched the boat, which caused Dave to go butt first into the open hatchway. Luckily he caught himself and didn't go far and so saved himself from what could have been a nasty time. As it is, he wasn't hurt and when I realised that I ...um... yes, I laughed. A lot. Well, it looked funny. So sue me!! :D
Mind you, I didn't laugh when I had MY accident a couple of hours later, and there was ACTUAL BLOOD! Dave had called me out to the back of the boat (I don't know what that bit's called.... it's behind the cockpit.... I'll call it the back yard as that's where my vegies will be when we're not sailing). As I eased my way through the patio door (poetic licence) I somehow managed to hit my head on the back stay, to which is attached some zip ties that have been cut to length to hold a wire or something (I must admit I had never taken much notice). One of the zip ties caught my forehead and cut my head open, and there was blood and the pain was swear, curse, expletive, cuss, verbalise PAINFUL. Okay so the blood didn't exactly run down my face, it kind of sat there and looked more like a little red fly was stuck to my face, but that's not the point. There was bodily fluids involved. Not cool!
As luck would have it I avoided a concussion that day, but we're finding that our skin is gradually turning a lovely blotchy greyish, yellowish, greenish, purplish colour all over as we're bruising more every day. Ah, the fun of it all.
By late afternoon the waves had eased and we got to Emu Bay with no more real problems. As we tied up on a buoy, the sea radio was blurting its crackle-speak as usual. Normally we wouldn't listen to it at this stage but a familiar boat name caught our attention, especially since the vessel was coincidentally heading in to Emu Bay for the night. We contacted Captain Colin and his crew (who had come over to do some cray diving) before they arrived and that evening we took a nice bottle of red and dinghied over to their yacht, Lionheart of Falmouth, for wine, nibbles and a bit of sailory chat, tall tales and more wine, chat and wine ... it was really nice wine. We dinghied back to Venture in the dark, had cups of coffee, got to bed late and slightly tipsy. It was a really pleasant interlude.
