Adventures aboard S/V Sonsie of Victoria

Sugar cane train ride!

03 November 2014 | Nadi, Fiji
We stayed there almost a week, until all the work was complete. During this time we had another fun outing, this time a walk which turned into an impromptu adventure: Jim waved and shouted a friendly "Bula!" to the operators of the small diesel locomotive pulling an empty sugarcane train. They stopped and invited us to hop on board and chug along for an hour, letting us pull the ear-splitting air horn at the many level crossings. We wobbled along at 5mph down the narrow-gauge tracks to Nadi (pronounced Nandi) town. What a fun jaunt! The cab was so small with the engineer, Jim and Isabel inside that the conductor had to hang on outside the loco, expertly ducking when the train brushed along trees as it chugged along! We hopped off in Nadi after they had humped cars onto various sidings. We took the open-sided, bumpy but faster bus back. As it was by now the end of the school day, lots of students in their nice summer uniforms were hopping on and off.
