Pacific Spirit
before bedtime
Ulrika
06 October 2009 | Wanim Island , Eastern PNG
The sea is a vast soft forest lake where the islands rest like sleeping animals with faintly glowing eyes of fire from the villages. The yellow moon paves a street of shimmering gold between the headlands and a few faint stars colour the wispy clouds in the dark sepia sky.

This is my bathroom.

I wash slowly in the cover of darkness, using a saucepan to pour water stored in the cool box over my salty sticky body...luxury...

While I brush my teeth I listen to the soft sounds of cicadas, sloshing gentle waves, murmurs and whispers from shore, someone singing, children's voices and the occasional bark of a moon-crazy mutt.

I am in my own space yet not alone, with the open sky and stars above me, wrapped in the soft warm gentle darkness, with the voices of the sea, the creatures and the people all around me to keep me company.

I know I will miss this bathroom and my time before bedtime.
