Wooden Boat Show - 2003
08 December 2005 | Port Townsend, Washington
September 1 - Left at 7:20am. Rained all day. The wind picked up in the afternoon in Icy Strait and rose all day, but we made good time and arrived at Funter Bay at 3:30. Huge !!! wind increase as we entered the bay. Over 50 knots really heeled the boat over. Very scarey for both of us. Not safe to get to the dock so were finally able to anchor in Coot Cove in 22 feet of water. Lots of scope and added a second anchor. Three men in a little boat who were setting out crab pots later brought us 3 Dungeonous crabs which we ate for dinner with corn on the cob and an onion/pepper saut. It was very messy and took a long time to eat them, but we persevered and finished them off with a glass of White Zinfandel. It was still raining and with a much more moderate amount of wind by then and not as cold as in Glacier Bay.
Sept. 2 & 3- Funter Bay to Auke Bay near Juneau (Alaska's capital). Headed north and reached 7 knots, then rounded the point and a huge headwind slowed us down lots. Much more boat and ship traffic now as we are approaching a very populated area. Final approach before harbor with too much wind. Hundreds of boats at docks. Only spot left was on outer dock with very large fish boats. Wind bouncing us around at the dock for a little while then calms a bit. We spend the night there ok but able to move inside completely at 7am. Check in with harbor master, do laundry, showers, and junk food ashore. Yea!!! Had a great visit with Klaus and Maria and Anna Marie before they left. Hard to meet new cruising folks and have to say goodbye so quickly.
Sept. 4 - Rode bus to airport and flew to Seattle then drove to Port Angeles to meet our Hawaii friends, Chuck and Mitzi, who have moved to Washington.
Sept 5 - We had a great time at the Wooden Boat Show in Port Townsend. So many beautiful classic wooden boats that you hardly knew where to look at any time. Enjoyed seeing Lyn and Larry Pardey again and their beautiful little vessel. All you can eat pizza tonight. Yummy.
Sept 6 - Said goodbye to our friends, visit wonderful public library to use computers, went to a farmer's market, had to skip the air show, and gun and knife show. Busy little town this weekend. Chinese buffet for dinner. Really like Port Angeles, Washington. Watch tv at hotel tonight and pack to enter Canada by driving rental car onto ferry tomorrow morning.
