It is a sad day as we leave the Tobago Cays as we also leave Stefan and Ilga who we have been with for over three months since Tenerife. They are heading down to Grenada for the hurricane season and we are going north we wish them all the best and hope that we meet again.
We extricate ourselves from the tricky reefs around the cays and head back to Bequia for a stopover. There is a school sports day in full swing and we decide to check this out. On the way we are accosted by a chap wanting 5 EC for a beer and offering to show us the way to the school though this is not really necessary as the screaming and shouting from the kids would have led us there. We give the chap his beer money and true to his word he takes us all the way to the school gates and even waits outside a shop where we buy water. We have come across this attitude before; people want money but want and expect to do something for it, a good ethos!
It is great to watch the kid’s race though there seems to be a massive difference in size in the same races though nobody seems concerned and everybody is enjoying the day. All the kids run in bare feet as not all can afford running shoes, a great leveller I feel.
As in all good school events the parents have stalls selling very good food at competitive rates and we feel it rude not to partake, it is delicious.
