Puerto Rico

We sailed across to the island of Culebra on Monday – it is part of Puerto Rico. We anchored in the bay of Ensenada Honda near the town of Dewey (which the locals also call Culebra). We walked out to the airport to Immigration to check us & Pannikin in. Dewey is a top little spot – very small, basic & laid back. Most visitors drive around in golf buggies & the locals in their great big pickups! We had a good wander around for a couple of hours. There are plenty of tourists here, mainly for the great beaches on the north of the island – not many hotels, most stay in guest houses. We had a beer at “The Dinghy Dock” & were totally blown away by the size of the tarpon swimming around the edge of the restaurant. HUGE!!!! There goes the idea of an afternoon swim off the back on Pannikin only about 200 metres away!!
Tuesday we made our way across to Puerto Rico. We are in the anchorage of Isleta Marina – a small island with hotel & marina 0.5nm off the coast of Fajardo. We spent the afternoon researching San Juan & watching the cute little ferry run backwards & forwards from the marina to Fajardo. Another dinner of great hamburgers with Steve’s homemade buns & an episode of ‘Dexter.’
Today we went into Fajardo. A waste of time really. We walked for 3 hours & found absolutely nothing of interest. The town of Fajardo is a fair way inland from the bay & had very little to excite us. The place is falling apart, rubbish everywhere & very hot. Crime is big here – everything including homes was heavily barred & locked. It may be very different experience if you are staying in one of the many huge marinas here... we don’t know. We’ve spent this afternoon reading & making water.
Tomorrow we are hiring a car & driving to San Juan – wish us luck!!!!!
