From Union Island I continued southward and stopped in at Hillsborough on the island of Carricou to do the customs thing again, checking in to Grenada, but being a weekend customs was not open so I was told to go to the Immigration office where a lovely lady checked me in. She said the Customs people were “limeing” which is a local word for bludging, sometimes they turn up sometimes they don’t. Once formalities were completed I went around the corner to Tyrell Bay which is calm and very protected from the swell where I spent a couple of nights. Steve and Shawn on Amaris turned up again and busted me reading a book in the hammock on the foredeck (limeing). They yelled out to stop being so lazy and come and have a beer. Ok.
On Monday I set off for Prickly Bay, Grenada which was 36 miles away which is a nice day sailing distance and as the pilot guide book said it could be quite rough I was eager to get going. The book was right! The current can flow against the wind making the waves stand up and the seas very confused, fortunately it only lasted for an hour and a half and the rest of the trip was spent beam reaching with 20kts. Very nice. I arrived in Prickly Bay not long after lunch and found a spot to drop the anchor amongst the multitude of boats. Due to the approaching hurricane season most boats head south to Grenada or Trinidad as they are supposed to be out of the hurricane belt, so every bay is pretty full.
Once Pannikin was secure I grabbed my surfboard and jumped in Mr Slappy as I saw a small surf break on the entrance to the bay. The waves were only 1-2ft and inconsistent but is was still nice to have a paddle around. The water is still around 29c so there is no chance of getting cold. I heard one bloke say “I’m sick of the cold, I’m going to put a T shirt on”
Tuesday was spent exploring, buying much needed groceries and laundry. On return to the boat I found the swell was wrapping into the bay and making a little uncomfortable, so I motored around to Secret Harbour which was just around the point and protected by outside reefs and much more comfortable if not a little more remote. The good part was the bar had happy hour with 3 beers for $4. Yippee!
Wednesday Angela arrives back this evening so giving Pannikin a good clean is a priority. It will be great to have my beautiful wife back!
P.S. We will get some photos uploaded if we ever find some decent internet service.
