We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Moving North

26 March 2011 | Chacala, Mexico
Larry Nelson
We've left La Cruz. We were getting very attached to that dock. So now it is back to being careful how much power we use and watching the weather and being careful not to run aground. We're cruising again. Tonight we are in Chacala, a tiny town on the mexican coast about 40 miles north from La Cruz. This is where we met Jake on our way south.

The plan is to go to San Blas tomorrow night. There have been a rash of dinghy thefts at this town so we will not stop unless we can go to the marina where they have better security (we hope). Trouble is the entrance to the marina is very shallow and not marked well. We have a cruisers waypoints what we will follow. Let's hope they work. In this case the worst that would happen is that we would go aground and it would be in a river so we don't think there is much risk to the boat. Our friends tell us that San Blas is an interesting town that we shouldn't miss. Stay tuned.

The next day we will go to Isla Isabella, a small set of offshore islands known for its birds. The interesting feature is the blue footed boobie which is not afraid of man. Of course there is always a catch. In this case it is the anchorage, which is tenuous and tends to either not hold onto the anchor or alternatively not let go of it. Either condition is bad...just bad at different times.

After Isla Isabella we will go to Mazatlan where we have a haul out planned to re-do the bottom paint. We need to fix the rudder and the bottom of the keel where the paint has washed away. Mazatlan is a big town and we are looking forward to stocking the boat there. While in the yard we'll defrost the refrigerator and freezer. Tonight we are trying to "eat them down".
