We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

A fast passage so far

19 August 2012 | Underway to Pago Pago from Suwarrow
Larry Nelson
We've left for Pago Pago. On our initial heading we have over 8 knot wind speed and a broad reach. We are double reefed on the main and the jib with an 18 knot wind. This is a fast point of sail. It could be faster, but we keep the sail plan conservative to give some leeway for things like squalls. I'm also looking at the lines. they are chafing everywhere. In particular, our reefing line is severely worn where it goes through the sail grommet. That probably happened on the way to Suwarrow. We've got is set a couple inches away from the wear point for this passage.

The good news: (1) we were able to raise our anchor since it was only tangled in the coral a very little bit and (2) we were able to start the engine, since we have been using the engine start battery to start the gen set while at anchor. We'll be buying a new battery for the gen set while in Pago Pago.

Since my last report we had a problem with the water maker. A plastic T fitting for the hoses that join the dual low pressure pumps sprang a leak in the side of the fitting. I was amazed. It was a very tiny hole but it sprayed salt water in quantity. I've re-plumbed the pumps to just use a single pump. This decreases the rate at which we make fresh water, but we still make it at 8 gph so we were able to fill the water tanks before leaving.

On the way out the wind blew my cap off my head. The two sharks that were standing watch on our boat while we were there went right for the hat but apparently decided even a shark shouldn't eat that. My neighbor picked up the had from his dinghy and we have it aboard now.

Miles to go to Pago Pago: 442nm Current speed: 8-9 knots ... blazing fast.

The picture is of Karen scuba diving near 7 Islands at the Suwarrow atol. You can tell her by her bright red flippers and blonde hair.
