We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

It's raining

02 September 2012 | Anchored in Pago Pago
Larry Nelson
It isn't just raining a little. The bay has filled with mud and debris. The dinghy has filled with rain water. Of course in the middle of the night the wind came up with the rain and many boats had to re-anchor. Fortunately we have a good set on our anchor and a second anchor is also set so we were stable. Storms are bad enough, but adding the insecurity of the anchor doubles the stress.

Today is Sunday so almost everything is closed. Monday is Labor Day so we won't be able to get our mail until Tuesday. According to the tracking system our mail is HERE. We sure hope so. Karen's ATM card quit working and when she called BECU they said they had discontinued her type of card and mailed new ones to us in July. Apparently they missed our last mail delivery (which happened in Raiatea). So...with luck....Karen will get her new ATM card and will be able to get cash. Larry's card is still working though we don't know why since it is the same type card as Karen has. If we couldn't get cash we would be in somewhat of a pickle. Things like ATMs are easy to take for granted since they almost always work.

We went for a hike yesterday to a waterfall. It wasn't a very long hike, but it was the standard scramble on tree roots and across slippery rock faces. And of course it rained. The swim in the pool beneath the waterfall was wonderful but we stayed completely soaked most of the day. When we got back to downtown the dinghy was filled with rain water. I don't know how many inches of rain fell, but it was a lot. We have a good pump for emptying the dinghy but it is hand operated. Larry got his exercise.

It rained all night and sometimes the wind blew pretty hard. Some of the boats in the anchorage drug anchor. This morning the bay is muddy and filled with debris. A ten foot section of a dock just floated by! Two days ago this was beautiful clear south pacific water. fortunately, we made water during that period.

We are enjoying all the conveniences that work almost like things in the US. We still haven't found Velveeta cheese in 2 pound loaves though.

The picture is of the waterfall we visited. Larry is under the waterfall.
