We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

13 September 2012 | At a dock in Apia Western Samoa
Larry Nelson
Yesterday we rented a car and toured the island we are staying on. Tomorrow we will go to Savaii, the neighboring island which is also part of Western Samoa, rent a car and spend three days exploring "rural" Western Samoa.

Last night we returned from our trip tired. We both "tipped over" into bed and went out like lights. About 3 am I became aware that Karen was talking to someone loudly. Karen says she was pounding on my leg. Maybe she was. I wondered why Karen was talking to someone (presuming that someone to be off the boat on the finger pier and that was the explanation why she was talking so loud). As I came awake I realized that she was actually talking to a man (a complete stranger) who was standing at the foot of our bed!

LIGHTS ON!!!! There he was. I took over the conversation while Karen handed me my pants. I walked him into the main cabin while getting his "story". Apparently he was looking for his wife and had to be at work at 6 am. I noticed that he had left cigarettes on the settee table and had eaten a bite out of a grapefruit that was out. Later I noticed that he had pushed buttons on the GPS (It was the only light source in the main cabin) and had opened a bag of tortilla chips. I asked him to leave and he complied with no difficulty. By this time there were other Samoans on the finger pier who were looking for him. Eventually Security came down and walked him away.

He was a confused guy and quite moderate in temperament. He was so confused that I doubt he really can go to work. I hope he finds his wife. We are fine, but we will lock the boat when we leave for our trip! (We do that anyway)

I wonder what will happen tomorrow that we don't expect?
