We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Preparing to leave for Opua NZ

26 October 2013 | Denerau Fiji

We have returned from a very relaxing trip to the Yasawa Island group. The activities included snorkeling, eating and drinking at local lodges, and socializing with local villagers and other yachties. Mostly, the weather was good. The vexing thing about Fiji is the ubiquitous uncharted reefs. Many yachts come to grief. You can see the reefs if the sun is high in the sky (basically travelling between 10 am and 3 pm) and provided that the water is clear. That condition is only satisfied a small part of the time. Trade winds blow and weather systems move through most the time. You find yourself in compromised situations. For example, one night we were returning to the boat after a night ashore with villagers. The wind was blowing 30 knots and it was very very dark. In these conditions we were going to dinghy to our mostly dark anchored boat quite some distance away. This involves quite a high pucker factor but it turned out ok.

We are about ready for the next stage of the adventure, the one where we return to Opua NZ. The weather looks good, but of course it looked good for the last two trips between Fiji (or Tonga) and NZ and it didn't quite work out that way. So we are preparing for the worst and will report on what actually happens as we can.

The picture shows a pretty fish that our friend Sandy Hollis photographed while snorkeling with us in Blue Lagoon.
