We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

A Tribute to My Dad

04 December 2013 | Opua, NZ
Larry Nelson
My dad died yesterday. He was 96 years old. He lived an enormous and constructive life. He worked very hard and the work he did made the world a better place with the people in it better off. He was kind to everyone and honest and generous.

He served as a navigator on B17s and B29s in the Air Force during WW2. The picture shows him in uniform with a wrinkle in his cap signifying more than 50 missions. He returned from the war and graduated from Kansas State University with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He started a family that eventually included 3 boys (I was number 2, though it was a close race) and a girl.

In the 50s Dad participated in the last land rush in the continental US. He chose a plot of land 8 miles outside Othello Washington. It had no power, no water, and no road to it. He led the effort (Mom had a starring role too) to make it a farm. Today it is an apple orchard.

There are so many events in an active 96 year life that they cannot all be commentated or maybe even remembered. But there are a whole lot of those of us left that feel his loss today and every day for the rest of our lives. Yes, Dad. You will be remembered.
