We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Reworking the interior of Panta Rhei

09 February 2014 | Whangerei
Larry Nelson
We have moved the boat to Whangerei from Opua. Whangerei is a wonderful town located about 3 hours up a river and about 40 miles south of Opua. The center of the town is the Town Basin Marina, which is protected from all weather extremes, except of course the river runs harder when it rains. Still....it runs fresh water so bottom fouling is not as rapid as in Opua. This is a real town with big grocery stores, movie theaters, restaurants, and lots of boat repair businesses. No wonder we like it.

We have a technician (Steve Eicher) working on our boat interior. We are getting new panels for the headliners throughout the boat, touch up of the varnish throughout, and a whole lot of little issues with the woodwork repaired. The interior of the boat will be better than it was when new when Steve is finished. It is so nice to have this actually happening. Finding Steve is like discovering gold. We finished the engine and mechanical work in Opua. What remains after Steve is to get new chain, and Grant McDuff is helping us with that. In about a month we should be fully refurbished, just in time to be on our way again.

And in the meantime, the marinas are filled with friends on other boats we cruise with. Many leave their boats here to fly home for a few months. We actually aren't staying in Town Basin. Instead we are staying in Riverside Marina. It is a small place nearly adjacent to Town Basin that has an amazingly friendly community of cruisers from all over the world. It is nestled in a tiny wide spot in the river that is surrounded by parks. Think of being in Lake Union in the summertime and that is what this feels like.

There is a brand new drawbridge just downriver from our marina. It is a beautiful bridge. At night it is lit for our enjoyment. With the new bridge and all the parks, the scenery from our cockpit is wonderful. Drinking coffee in the cockpit in the morning has never been so good!

The picture shows our path into the marina except that the bridge is so new it is not yet on the map!
