Here we are, posed to leave. we have the sail covers off and the staysail hanked on and the dinghy stowed on deck. The instrument cluster and autopilot are on and appear to work fine. Yay! New House Bank Batteries are Installed and Working

It happened! Who can believe it? But it is true. Two of the removed batteries were bad, bulging cases and shorted cells. Four of them will move on to a new life in the out islands. The new batteries are beautiful with more capacity than the batteries that were removed.

Batteries coming Monday

Yes, I know. Last post they were coming Friday. That is yesterday now. But really I'm not unhappy. Monday is LOTS better than say a month from Monday. This is cruising, which is a word for "waiting in overly hot places".

Position at Tues May 2016 local time is 17d50mN 172d3mE.

We are making 6 knots and have 2422 nm to go.

cog 9.2 degrees magnetic. winds 19k

We are hard to port for endless days as we move to weather. This puts sea water pressure on our Groco sea water strainer that feeds the gen set. It leaks at its top seal. We are getting buckets of sea water into the engine compartment. We shut off the thru hull, but there is still a small leak.

We are still hot. Larry's seackness is improved.

Everything is hard to do including type this email!

making 6.3 knots cog 358m

Winds are 17 knots and we are running hard to weather so the boat is tipped and I'm having trouble staying in place to type this.
Both Karen and I have little clothing on. Yes we have the hatches closed.

I'm beginning to feel a little better. Karen fed me a cup of tomato soup and later a cup of beef stew. I really appreciate her doing this. Its not an easy task. It had been two days since we had eaten. Karen has had some crackers, but that is not much.

It is hot and sunny now. With the refrigerator off, the solar panels just about keep up with the load with enough extra to make it through the night. There is a west setting current here. Our heading is 017 but our course over ground is 003. That made it hard to miss the northern most islands of the Radik Chain. The wind clocked east, fortunately.

Note that we are sailing to weather. This magnifies the roughness of the sea a great deal. All those weather maps that say this is easy need interpretation!

More later.

We are sailing fast and that means that we are sailing on our ear. Its very uncomfortable. Also, Karen is hot. So, she is running around the boat naked. In order to help her I opened the hatch over the main salon. About half an hour later we got aboiut a gallon of sea water in the hatch from a wave splash. Not good. It drenched the computer and now the keyboard doesn't work. I'm using the back up computer to send this email. That is difficult in these conditions, so be patient.
We also had the refrigerator fail.

Majuro Departure

Here we are, posed to leave. we have the sail covers off and the staysail hanked on and the dinghy stowed on deck. The instrument cluster and autopilot are on and appear to work fine. Yay! The gps connects to the computer and ais targets are visible. The house bank battery measures 25.5 volts (26 volts is fully charged) after running the boat all night. That is very good. The day is overcast and there are thunderstorms. Before dawn we had a deluge, now just 10 knots of wind from the east.

All this is something of a miracle. Many of these systems didn't work but somehow we fixed them and we fixed them in time. Many boats try to leave here but cannot. During the long wait, things on their boats have broken until they simply aren't seaworthy. The sea we face is large, no matter the direction you choose. This year we are one of the lucky ones. We are actually leaving.

We will eat breakfast before we leave. We want as easy a departure as possible. There will be plenty of eating underway in the days ahead.

It happened! Who can believe it? But it is true. Two of the removed batteries were bad, bulging cases and shorted cells. Four of them will move on to a new life in the out islands. The new batteries are beautiful with more capacity than the batteries that were removed.

To install them we came at high tide to the fuel dock and used a dolly to move them from the truck to the warf. Then we used a halyard to lift them from the warf into the boat. They are installed under the forward berth. Today we will do a final laundry, download weather, and check out of the country. Our destination is Dutch Harbor Alaska. It is about a 25 day trip, entirely dependent on weather (especially wind). WE have full tanks of fuel and an extra 30 gallons in the cockpit in jerry cans.

We are very excited to finally be going north. Karten is particularly anxious because she has a persistent heat rash. Alaska is a sure cure for that!

And those of you looking at the weather in the Pacific will note that summer seems to have arrived. More good news.

Meanwhile, the boat continues to break and I continue to work desperately to develop fixes. There are two recent difficulties. The gen set lost its salt water prime which led to overheating and shutdown. And the ground system between the computer and GPS multiplexers developed a tiny offset which caused the USB inputs not to be recognized by the computer. Does this strike you as obscure and hard to fix? The effect was to completely disable navigation on a pc. I can work around it, but I sure don't want to. I found the fault and fixed it. It wasn't easy. For a while, our spirits were in the toilet.

All better now and Monday is set to be an important day.

The picture shows a 60 foot sailboat that just sold for $15K USD. Of course it was derelict and towed into Majuro.
