We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Recovering from a long passage

01 August 2010 | Gowlland Harbor
Larry Nelson
We made the passage from Port McNeil, arriving in Gowlland Harbor (across from Campbell River) at 8:30 pm.. We left Ponderosa to find their way without our help to Seattle (they seem quite capable...but Panta Rhei operating without our "tour guides" is an open question) where we will meet up again for our passage to Mexico. This allows us to get to the boatyard and repair the rudder and the shift control and hopefully be ready to stat the passage south while the weather in the Pacific is good.

Gowlland Harbor is across from Campbell Rier, a standard provisioning place on passages north. We stopped here because we have an inoperable shift lever in the cockpit and are using just the below decks shift control. This makes going to a dock difficult (not impossible). So we are just anchoring out and we will take our dinghy across to Campbell river if we want to go there. The dinghy operates for us like a car works for a dirt dweller. The good news is that it is warm and sunny with calm wind. What could be nicer? We decided to skip breakfast and go straight to the dinner that we didn't take time to eat last night. Sometimes we eat breakfast for dinner so why not the other way around?

We made a schedule for reaching Seattle and allowed ourselves some time for rest along the way. We may try going swimming here today. I felt the water and can report that it is way too cold. We may go anyway if the sun is warm enough. We haven't been swimming yet this summer and it is about time to do it. We're retired. We can do anything we want to. But do we want to?
