We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Will we make Turtle Bay before dark? 47 nm to go

08 November 2010 | 8:26 am 11_8_2010 enroute report
Larry Nelson
We've completed our second night at sea still under sail. Again, Karen is a powerhouse watch stander. Winds peaked at 27 knots (in the middle of the night, of course) and we roared toward our destination (sometimes at 9+ knots). Eventually Karen called for the sail change and we rolled up the jib. It's back out now since the wind has dropped to 16 knots.

We're really glad that we had the wind last night since we are due to arrive at Turtle Bay just before dark tonight. We need boat speed or we will be closing the unknown shore sailing into a BLACK ABYSS. It is overcast and therefore there are no stars and still no moon. A cave is lighter than this ocean at night. The difficulty is that the chart accuracy is not as good in Mexico as it is in the US. We can use the radar for adjustment, but a much better adjustment is to be able to see. We don't want to sit out the night at sea. Turtle bay is a big bay so we would go ahead and enter at night, but that is not the preferred plan.

We checked into the Sonrisa Net this morning, following Jake's instructions. We are very pleased to report that our ssb worked great. this is the first time we've used it in this way. It didn't upset the autopilot this time. On other occasions it not only upsets the autopilot, it causes the computer to fail also. That means that we don't have navigation until we reboot (or with Vista...rebuild) the computer. So we've not done it at night and in the fog. The Sonrisa Net happens at 7:30 am so we have daylight and this morning we had fairly easy wind and sea conditions. Is it any wonder that the single Sideband radio is aka "the Devil Radio"?

We are looking forward to an easy night at anchor and touring the town of Turtle Bay. The town is rumored to have great tacos.
