We are back in Seattle

It feels like home. Of course we are not in Silshole. Maybe we will be, someday, but there is a list and we are on it. In the meantime we are at Bainbridge Island Marina.

The dinghy holds air again

It wasn't very nice of the bear to tear the fabric across a seam. We were worried that we couldn't patch it but tried anyway. The glue had a job to do and it did it!

A Grizzly Bear damaged our dinghy

We were visiting the Anan Bear Observatory south of Wrangell. It is one of the best places to visit in all of SE Alaska BECAUSE it has bears. But (as we learned) there is a dark side to this bear concentration. And of course, there is a story to tell.

Moving On

"No matter where you go, there you are" (unknown reference). By now we have been there and done that. Most recently that included Cannery Cove on Admiralty Island. The photo shows the quiet grandeur of the setting with Ron and Suzie's boat SV Tango in the foreground. It has been like that for the last [...]

We are in Hoonah, SE Alaska now

We got something resembling a high pressure ridge so we moved expeditously across the Gulf of Alaska. The crossing took three days and weather stayed as forecast. That was a very good thing. The weather changes in the far north far more rapidly and dramatically than we ever experienced in the more southern [...]

Crossing the Gulf of Alaska

We are still in Seward, AK. Now that spring has come, why not start south?

Philo's with friends is as good as it gets

19 November 2010 | La Cruz de Huanacaxle Mexico
Larry Nelson
We left Chacala yesterday morning for a short trip (45nm) to La Cruz. Leaving? We barely got there! Who would leave Shangrila? But we have friends to see before they run away themselves, so we gotta go.

We've come to another beautiful anchorage at a little town that is a surburb of Puerto Vallarta. They build a BIG marina here that has some BIG boats. yesterday we took our dinghies into the marina and saw a superyacht that had a place to hang a person off the side of the boat so they could clean the sides (like window scaffolding on skyscrapers). We're anchored outside the marina saving pennies by being anchored. There is no real loss. We're self sustaining. We made water on the way down yesterday and our batteries are charged and the sun is out. The weather is good and the holding (in the anchorage) is good...so we are secure. We are in Banderas Bay, which is the big bay that Puerto Vallarta fronts.

After our arrival we went into the nearby city. It is simple but clean and it has some great little restraunts. It also has Huanacaxle trees in the city square that are so full of birds that the noise is deafening. A number of gringos have decided that this is the place to be and they've put down roots. A guy named Philo has a restaurant/bar and plays in the band himself. It was a wonderful scene. Philo's band was very good. They had a guy wearing a washboard with bells, a symbol, a horn, a scratch pad attached that he played with gloves with metal on the fingers. It is a poor description of a very clever musical instrument and it looks hokey, but the guy was REALLY GOOD at playing it. He was a gringo ex high school principal, who could have guessed? It was fun.

We enjoyed it so much that we are going to another place for breakfast. We'll be here about a week exploring and having fun. We're slowing our pace on the water, but speeding up the pace ashore.
